A Conversation with Amangpintor: Art, Identity, and Inspiration

Recently, Daniel Yenko, a student from Manila, interviewed Amangpintor. Here is his question:

Who are you and what is your story?

I am Elito Circa, also known as Amangpintor, a self-taught artist from Pantabangan, Nueva Ecija. I was born into a humble farming family and grew up with limited resources, yet my passion for art grew stronger each day. I painted using indigenous materials and even my own hair and blood when art supplies were scarce. From drawing on the walls of our house to holding exhibits in and outside the Philippines, my journey is a story of determination, cultural pride, and faith in my calling as an artist.

What's your creative specialty? What/who inspired you to pursue this creative specialty?

My creative specialty is what I call Indigenouism Art, and hand painting — a visual expression that blends indigenous culture, history, and environmental advocacy. My inspiration came from the rich stories of my ancestors “Alamat ni Minggan”, the colorful traditions of our tribe, and the struggles of our people during resettlement of Pantabangan in 1973. The natural world, spiritual values, and my deep love for the Philippines also played a big part.

What are the themes you explore in these works of yours?
I explore themes of identity, culture, heritage, environmental protection, spirituality, and the daily lives of Filipinos, especially those in rural and indigenous communities. My works reflect both the beauty and the struggles of being Filipino—rooted in history yet reaching toward the future.

Regarding your creative specialty, does it fulfill you?

Yes, it deeply fulfills me. Art is not only my expression; it is my mission and advocacy. When I see young people become inspired, when I witness my paintings helping others remember who they are and where they came from and develop their discipline and love the environment—that gives my work true meaning.

Any special words you'd like to say to anyone who would pursue dreams similar to yours?

Never let poverty, lack of tools, or criticism stop you. Your story, culture, and truth are powerful. Keep painting, writing, or expressing—even if the world doesn’t notice right away. One day, your voice will find its place. Always honor your roots, and let your heart lead your art.
